“I’d Wait a Million Years” (The Grass Roots)

Single version of “I’d Wait a Million Years” by the Grass Roots

Today’s classic song of the day is “I’d Wait a Million Years” by the Grass Roots. This single, released in June of 1969, went to #15 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #12 on the Cash Box Top 100.

“I’d Wait a Million Years” (alternately titled “Wait a Million Years” or “(I’d) Wait a Million Years” or simply “Million Years”) was written by Gary Zekley and Mitchell Bottler. Zekler also wrote songs recorded by Jan and Dean, Spanky and Our Gang, the Mamas & the Papas, and the Yellow Balloon. Zekler and Bottler together (along with Adeniyi Paris and Ekundayo Paris) wrote another hit for the Grass Roots, 1971’s “Sooner or Later.” Steve Barri produced.

Note that the album version of the song differs a bit from the shorter single version. The version of “I’d Wait a Million Years” on the Leaving It All Behind album adds a rubato organ intro and a longer fadeout, as well as a different stereo mix.

And that leads us to today’s daily bonus track of the day, the longer album version of “I’d Wait a Million Years.” I think I like the single better.
