“I’ve Just Seen a Face” (The Beatles)

Today’s classic song of the day is “I’ve Just Seen a Face” by the Beatles. It was a bit of a departure for the boys, an uptempo tune with a country/bluegrass feel. No drumset, no bass, just three acoustic guitars and Ringo playing brushes on the snare drum (and some maracas overdubbed).

While credited to the Lennon-McCartney combine, as were all of their Beatles-era songs, “I’ve Just Seen a Face” was written exclusively by Paul McCartney, when he was living in his girlfriend Jane Asher’s parents’ house on Wimpole Street in London. The song, which is all about love at first sight, might have even been inspired by her:

I’ve just seen a face
I can’t forget the time or place where we just met
She’s just the girl for me
And I want all the world to see we’ve met
Mm mm mm mm mm

Here’s what Sir Paul remembers about the song:

“It was slightly country and western from my point of view. It was faster, though, it was a strange uptempo thing. I was quite pleased with it. The lyric works: it keeps dragging you forward, it keeps pulling you to the next line, there’s an insistent quality to it that I liked.”

The Beatles recorded “I’ve Just Seen a Face” on the morning of June 14, 1965, with George Martin producing and engineer Norman Smith behind the board. It only took six takes, with a bit of overdubbing. It was part of a marathon of recording McCartney-penned songs; that same day, the boys also recorded “Yesterday” and “I’m Down.”

EMI’s Parlophone label released “I’ve Just Seen a Face” as a track on the Help! soundtrack album in August of 1965. Capitol Records scrubbed the tune and other non-film tracks from the U.S. version of the (preferring orchestral pieces from the film’s soundtrack), instead including it on the U.S. version of the Rubber Soul album. It’s a great little tune on whichever album you first heard it.

Paul liked the tune enough to include it on the setlist for several Wings tours and on 1976’s Wings Over America triple-LP. For today’s daily bonus video of the day, we have Paul McCartney and Wings performing “I’ve Just a Face” on the Rockshow concert film, sourced from that same American tour. It’s a good one.
