“Call Me” (Al Green)

The third song this week called “Call Me” (after totally different songs by Petula Clark/Chris Montez and Aretha Franklin) is one by soul singer Al Green. Technically titled “Call Me (Come Back Home),” this single was released in January of 1973 and peaked at #10 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #2 on Billboard’s R&B singles chart.

“Call Me (Come Back Home)” was written by Al Green, drummer Al Jackson Jr., and producer Willie Mitchell. It was the title track of Mr. Green’s 1973 album, Call Me, which also included the singles “You Ought to Be With Me” and “Here I Am (Come and Take Me).” All the tracks on the album were produced by Willie Mitchell and recorded at Royal Recording Studios in Memphis. Released on Hi Records, many consider the Call Me album to be Mr. Green’s best. It’s difficult to argue with that.

And here’s today’s daily bonus video of the day, the Reverend Al Green singing “Call Me (Come Back Home)” live on the August 3, 1973, episode of The Midnight Special. Man, that’s soul!
