Today’s classic early ’70s song of the day is “Chick-A-Boom (Don’t Ya Jes’Love It”) by some dude calling himself Daddy Dewdrop. This odd little single, released in February of 1971, unaccountably rose to #9 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #5 on the Cash Box Top 100.
“Chick-A-Boom” is a song with spoken lyrics in the verses about a guy having a “crazy dream about a chick in a black bikini,” and the narrator’s pursuit of said young lass. If it sounds a little like something you might hear in a Saturday morning cartoon, that’s because it was originally written (by Janice Lee Gwin and Linda Martin) for the 1970-1971 Filmation animated series, Groovie Ghoulies. After the song aired on the show, Mr. Dewdrop decided to rerecord it for his own solo release.
The dude calling himself Daddy Dewdrop was, in actuality, Dick Monda, who was the music producer for Groovie Ghoulies. He also happened to be an actor and a musician who adopted the persona of Daddy Dewdrop for his recordings. “Chick-A-Boom” was his only hit in the U.S., although he had a second hit in Canada with a tune called “Nanu, Nanu, (I Wanna Get Funky Wich You).” As near as I can tell from his website, he’s still active in one form or another today, aged 83.
And here’s your daily bonus video of the day, the original version of “Chick-A-Boom” from the Groovie Ghouies show, sung by the “Rolling Headstones.” Yeah, that’s typical Filmation limited animation—don’t ya jes’ love it?
