Today’s classic song of the day is “Ebony Eyes” by Bob Welch. This was a follow-up to his previous hit, “Sentimental Lady,” which was a top ten hit in 1977.
Bob Welch wrote “Ebony Eyes” and released it as a single in January of 1978. It just missed the top ten in the U.S., peaking at #14 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #12 on the Cash Box Top 100.

As noted in a previous post, Bob Welch started playing music professionally in 1964, with an L.A.-based group called the Seven Souls. He joined an early version of Fleetwood Mac in 1971 but left that band in December of 1974 to become a solo act. He experienced only moderate success, however, with two big albums (1977’s French Kiss and 1979’s Three Hearts) and three decent-selling singles (“Sentimental Lady,” “Ebony Eyes,” and 1979’s “Precious Love”). His subsequent work flew under the radar and he eventually committed suicide in 2012. He was 66 years old.
