“Losing You” (Dusty Springfield)

British singer Dusty Springfield brings us today’s classic song of the day, “Losing You.” Dusty released this single in October of 1964, as a follow up to “I Just Don’t Know What to Do with Myself.” It stalled at #91 on the Billboard Hot 100, unfortunately, but went all the way to #9 on the UK charts.

“Losing You” is a real barnburner of a ballad, a torch song all about (surprise!) losing a lover. It was written by Dusty’s brother Tom Springfield, along with Clive Westlake, and produced by Dusty’s frequent producer, Johnny Franz.

Dusty pulls out all the stops on this one, belting it out with emotion. I think it’s one of her best recorded performances—and even better live, as you can see in today’s daily bonus video of the day. It’s Dusty performing “Losing You” live on her BBC/ITV television show, Dusty, in 1966. There’s a reason she’s one of my favorite female singers of the ’60s—or of any decade. This is just terrific.
