“Love Won’t Let Me Wait” (Major Harris)

Yesterday’s classic song of the day was “The Monkey Time” by Major Lance. Today’s classic song of the day is by another Major, Major Harris. The song is ‘Love Won’t Let Me Wait” and it was released in March of 1975. The single went to #5 on the Billboard Hot 100, #3 on the Cashbox Top 100, and #1 on Billboard’s R&B Singles chart.

“Love Won’t Let Me Wait” was a slow jam written by the team of Vinnie Barrett and Bobby Eli. They were responsible for Blue Magic’s “Sideshow,” the Main Ingredient’s “Just Don’t Want to Be Lonely,” and many other Philly soul hits. Eli also arranged and produced Major Harris’ single.

Major Harris was born in Richmond, Virginia, to two music-loving parents. He sang with various groups, including the Jarmels, the Teenagers (post-Frankie Lymon), and then the Philly soul group the Delfonics (after they’d had their big hits in the late ’60s/early ’70s). He left the Delfonics to go solo in 1974, signing with Atlantic Records. “Love Don’t Let Me Wait” was his big hit, but he also released a few other singles that charted on the R&B and Disco charts. He passed away in 2012, age 65.

By the way, Deniece Williams and Johnny Mathis duetted on a cover of “Love Won’t Let Me Wait” in 1984. Their version was a minor hit, not quite cracking the Hot 100 but reaching #32 on Billboard’s R&B Singles chart and #14 on the Adult Contemporary chart.

And here’s today’s daily bonus video of the day, Major Harris performing “Love Won’t Let Me Wait” on the April 12, 1975, episode of Soul Train. Turn down the lights when you listen to this one, folks.
