“More More More” (Andrea True Connection)

Today’s classic song of the day is “More More More” by singer Andrea True, recording under the Andrea True Connection name. There’s a very interesting story behind this one.

Andrea True, born Andrea Marie Truden, was a classically trained pianist who became an actress in pornographic films in the late 1960s. Her first prominent role was in the porn flick Head Nurses, in 1972, and she ended up appearing in or directing more than 50 hardcore films. Ms. True also appeared as an extra in several legitimate films, including The Way We Were.

In 1975, Ms. True was hired by a real estate business in Jamaica to appear in a series of commercials for their firm. Unfortunately for Ms. True, the Jamaican government had just banned asset transfers out of the country, so she either had to forego that income or spend the money in Jamaica—which is what she decided to do.

Andrea True had been trying to break into the music industry for some time, so she opted to use her earnings from those commercials to finance the recording of a demo. The song she chose to record was “More More More,” which was written by her producer, Gregg Diamond. They recruited a group of local Jamaican musicians and cut the track, under the name of the Andrea True Connection.

That demo found its way to Buddah Records, which released the song to a bunch of big city discos early in 1976. It was a hit there, thanks to its insistent disco beat (and that cool little piano break), which convinced Buddah to release it as a mainstream single. That single was a smash hit, going to #4 on the Billboard Hot 100, #3 on the Cash Box Top 100, and #1 on Billboard’s Dance Music/Club Play chart.

Ms. True had one more minor hit, 1977’s “N.Y., You Got Me Dancing,” which reached #27 on the Hot 100 and #4 on the Dance Music chart. After a few more minor releases, she had to have vocal cord surgery that effectively ended her singing career. She never returned to acting in porn films.

Andrea True spent her later years working as a counselor for people struggling with substance abuse. (And also as an astrologer, but the less said about that, the better.) She passed away in 2011 of heart failure. She was 68 years old.

And here’s your daily bonus video of the day, Andrea True lip synching and gyrating her way through “More More More” on the German television program, Musikladen, in 1976. It does have a catchy beat… and Ms. True was definitely a looker.
