“Precious Love” (Bob Welch)

“Precious Love,” today’s classic song of the day, was written and recorded by former Fleetwood Mac member Bob Welch. Released as a single in January of 1979, “Precious Love” peaked at #19 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #17 on the Cash Box Top 100.

Some people might remember Bob Welch as a member of Fleetwood Mac, before they hit it big. He joined that group in 1971 but left in December of 1974, amidst a slew of internal turmoil. He was replaced by Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks, and we all know how that worked out.

Post-Mac, Welch pursued a somewhat successful solo career. “Precious Love” was his third and last top forty hit, following 1977’s “Sentimental Lady” and 1978’s “Ebony Eyes.” He continued recording and performing for a few years, but his career was essentially over by 1983 or so. After that, he developed a serious cocaine and heroin addiction but eventually got himself clean. After several years of sober and apparently peaceful living, Bob Welch committed suicide in 2012. He was 66 years old.

Remembering Bob Welch, here’s today’s daily bonus video of the day. It’s Mr. Welch, surrounded by a bevy of good-looking dancers, lip synching “Precious Love” on the popular Australian television program, Countdown. The man could write a catchy tune.
