“Silver Bird” (Mark Lindsay)

Today’s classic song of the day is “Silver Bird” by Mark Lindsay. This was Lindsay’s third big hit of his post-Paul Revere & the Raiders solo career, after “Arizona” (1969) and “Miss America” (1970).

“Silver Bird” was written by industry pros Kenny Young and Artie Butler. (Kenny also wrote Lindsay’s previous hit, “Arizona.”) The single was released in May of 1970 and rose to #25 on the Billboard Hot 100, #20 on the Cash Box Top 100, and #7 on Billboard’s Adult Contemporary chart.

The song is about a guy seeing his girlfriend off on a plane ride to somewhere:

Silver bird, fly my lady away
Silver bird, take her over the bay
Silver bird, give my lady a ride
And let her go see what’s on the other side
Silver bird, fly my lady away
Pretty bird, today is the day

That’s about it, really.

You might remember Mark Lindsay, before he went solo, as the lead vocalist for Paul Revere and the Raiders. They had a bevy of high-charting singles, including “Kicks,” “Hungry,” “Good Thing,” and “Indian Reservation.” Lindsay began his solo career in 1969, recording more easy listening tracks than he sang with Raiders. He’s still performing today, as well as hosting the American Revolution show on SiriusXM Satellite Radio, on Little Steven’s Underground Garage channel.
