Today’s classic song of the day is “Sweet Life” by Paul Davis. Released in August of 1978, this slice of mellow rock peaked at #17 on the Billboard Hot 100, #15 on the Cash Box Top 100, and #7 on Billboard’s Adult Contemporary chart.
Paul Davis wrote “Sweet Life” about the “sweet life” of a family man. The lyrics are warm and affectionate and the music won’t offend anybody:
She’s got your eyes
She’s got my nose
Oh, I get high just watching her grow
I always dreamed we’d live in a castle, oh but
We’re in the same old shack
Sometimes we get into a hassle
But we always take each other back
Oh, you know
All our friends seem to be in a hurry
But we’ll just keep on taking our time
We’re living such a sweet life, oh what a neat life
Sharing my love with you
Oh, we’re living such a sweet life, oh what a neat life
Making our dreams come true
We’re makin our dreams come true
Definitely not a song for teenie boppers. For us older listeners, it’s hard not to like this one.
“Sweet Life” was the third of a string of hits from Davis’ Singer of Songs – Teller of Tales Album; the others were “I Go Crazy” and “Darlin’.” He had a few more hits a little later on: 1980’s “Do Right,” 1981’s “Cool Night,” and 1982’s “’65 Love Affair.” Davis retired from recording in 1983, save for a couple of duets with country artists Marie Osmond (“You’re Still New to Me”) and Tanya Tucker and Paul Overstreet (“I Won’t Take Less Than Your Love”—technically a trio, since there were three of them singing). He continued writing, however, including two songs for his friend Dan Seals (“Meet Me in Montana” and “Bop”).
Paul Davis left the music industry for good in 1988. He died of a heart attack in 2008, a day after his 60th birthday.
