“Thunder and Lightning” (Chi Coltrane)

Last week we featured songs about rain, so let’s kick of this week with a song about thunder and lightning. In fact, that’s the name of today’s classic song of the day—”Thunder and Lightning,” by Chi Coltrane. This track was released as a single in August of 1972 and went all the way to #17 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #15 on the Cash Box Top 100.

Chi Coltrane, who wrote “Thunder and Lightning,” is a Chicago-based rock and blues singer and songwriter with a powerhouse voice. She only had that one hit in the U.S. but was somewhat more popular in Europe. For example, she had a number-one hit in the Netherlands in 1973 with the song “Go Like Elijah.” She released seven albums through the ’70s and ’80s and continues to perform today. (You can read more about her past and current activities on her website.)

Based on clips on YouTube, Ms. Coltrane was and is a dynamic performer. That’s verified by today’s daily bonus video of the day, Chi Coltrane performing “Thunder and Lighting” live on the May 4, 1973, episode of The Midnight Special.
