“My Love” (Paul McCartney & Wings)

Continuing our look at post-Beatles solo work by former members of that group, today’s classic song of the day is “My Love” by Paul McCartney & Wings. Don’t let the credit fool you; like anything credited to Paul McCartney, Paul and Linda McCartney, or Paul McCartney and Wings, this is a Paul McCartney production from start to finish.

“My Love,” supposedly written by Paul McCartney with the help of his wife Linda (but really, it’s all Paul), was released as a single in March of 1973. It was a major hit worldwide, hitting #1 on both the Billboard Hot 100 and Billboard’s Easy Listening charts. It was also a top ten hit in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Norway, and McCartney’s native UK.

Not surprisingly, “My Love” is a love song, written by McCartney to his wife Linda. It’s there in the lyrics:

And when I go away
I know my heart can stay with my love
It’s understood, it’s in the hands of my love
And my love does it good

Although the song wasn’t released until 1973, McCartney supposedly wrote it much earlier in their relationship, in either 1969 or 1970. McCartney’s group Wings played the song live at Abbey Road Studios, with McCartney himself on Fender Rhodes electric piano, Henry McCollough on electric guitar, Denny Laine on bass, and Denny Seiwell on drums. Richard Hewson did the arrangement for the 50-piece orchestra.

While not one of McCartney’s most adventuresome songs, either melodically or lyrically, “My Love” obviously found its audience. For today’s daily bonus video of the day, here’s Sir Paul and Wings performing “My Love” live in 1980 for the Rockshow concert film. My love does it good…
