Patty & the Emblems were a one-hit wonder and their one hit is today’s classic song of the day. That song is “Mixed-Up, Shook-Up Girl,” from 1964. It just broke into the top forty, peaking at #37 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #28 on the Cash Box Top 100.
“Mixed-Up, Shook-Up Girl” was written by Ralston McGriff and Leon Huff. Mr. Huff, of course, would go onto greater fame as one of the chief architects of the Philly Soul sound. He was a neighbor of lead singer Patty Russell and wrote several songs for the group.
Patty & the Emblems were a vocal group out of Camden, New Jersey. Their members included lead singer Patty Russell, Eddie Watts Sr., Vance Walker, and Alexander Wildes Sr. They released a handful of singles but “Mixed-Up, Shook-Up Girl” was their only hit. They broke up in 1967.
(Don’t confuse the 1964 single “Mixed-Up, Shook-Up Girl” with the song of the same name released by Mink DeVille in 1977. Same title, different song.)
