Today’s classic song of the day was released in June of 1965 on Atlantic Records. The song is “Baby, I’m Yours” by Barbara Lewis and it peaked at #11 on the Billboard Hot 100.
“Baby, I’m Yours” was written by Van McCoy, who years later would have a hit of his own with the disco track, “The Hustle.” The record was produced by Bert Berns, himself a very famous songwriter, with an additional producing credit given to Ollie McLaughlin, Barbara Lewis’ manager. The recording took place at Atlantic Recording Studios in New York City and featured some of the city’s top studio musicians, including jazz trumpeter Clark Terry and ace drummer Gary Chester.
Ms. Lewis was originally intimidated by Mr. McCoy’s stellar demo tape and gave a half-hearted vocal performance in an effort to get the project shelved. Instead, her producer forced her to re-record her vocals in Detroit. That second try was more than good enough.
