For this fine Tuesday morning, let’s turn to the Chairmen of the Board for today’s classic song of the day. That song is “Everything’s Tuesday” and it was released as a single in August of 1970. It rose to #38 on the Billboard Hot 100.
“Everything’s Tuesday” was written by the former Motown team of Brian Holland, Lamont Dozier, and Eddie Holland (AKA Holland-Dozier-Holland, AKA H-D-H), under the pseudonym of Edyth Wayne, along with Daphne Dumas and Ron Dunbar. With General Johnson singing lead, this was the group’s third of four top forty hits, the others being “Give Me Just a Little More Time,” “(You’ve Got Me) Dangling on a String,” and “Pay to the Piper.” All their songs were released on the Invictus Records label, which H-D-H created after they left Motown in 1968 over a financial dispute.
H-D-H recruited General Johnson, who’d been the lead singer of the Showmen, who’d had a previous hit with “I Will Stand,” to form a new group for their new label. They paired him with Eddie Custis, Danny Woods, and Harrison Kennedy to become the Chairmen of the Board, Invictus’ new flagship act.
Eddie Custis left the group in 1972 and Harrison Kennedy shortly after. General Johnson and Danny Woods soldiered on, with replacement members, through the middle of 1976, then disbanded the group. Johnson and Woods reformed the group a few years later but shifted their emphasis to Carolina Beach Music. They continued to perform together until Johnson’s death in 2010.
