“Little Woman” (Bobby Sherman)

Honoring the late Bobby Sherman, who passed away earlier this week, today’s classic song of the day is “Little Woman.” This was his first big hit and his biggest single overall; released in May of 1969, this one peaked at #3 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #1 on the Cash Box Top 100.

Even though Bobby Sherman had been releasing records since the early ’60s, “Little Woman” marked his first recording for Metromedia Records. He’d go on to have a nice collection of hits, including “La La La (If I Had You)” (#9 in late 1969/early 1970), “Easy Come, Easy Go” (#9 in 1970), “Julie, Do Ya Love Me” (#5 in 1970), and “Cried Like a Baby” (#16 in 1971). His recording career lasted until 1975 or so, as did his acting career. (You probably know him best for his role as little brother Jeremy Bolt on Here Come the Brides.)

“Little Woman” was written by songwriter Danny Janssen, who co-wrote “Come On Get Happy!,” the theme song for The Partridge Family television show. He also composed music for a host of Saturday morning cartoons, including Scooby Doo, Where Are You!, as well as several other songs for Mr. Sherman (“La La La” and “Hey Mister Sun”), Austin Roberts (“Keep on Singing” and “The Last Thing on My Mind”), the Partridge Family (“Friend and a Lover”), and Brenda & Herb (“Tonight I’m Gonna Make You a Star”).

One key to Bobby Sherman’s success is the choice of songs, all brassy bubblegum pop selected by his producer, Jackie Mills. For “Little Woman,” Mills assembled members of L.A.’s Wrecking Crew to provide the backing, including James Burton and Alton Hendrickson on guitars, Don Randi on piano, Jerry Scheff on bass, Emil Richards on percussion, and Jim Gordon on drums.

Bobby Sherman may have been the ultimate teen idol. He certainly had the looks and the corresponding teen and pre-teen girl following. It also helped that he was an engaging entertainer who always seemed to be enjoying himself onstage. Many women of a certain age certainly remember him fondly. He passed away on June 24, 2025. He was 81 years old.

And here’s your daily bonus video of the day, teen heartthrob Bobby Sherman singing his big hit, “Little Woman,” on the Music Scene television show. He’s not lip-synching; he’s singing live to a prerecorded background track. Great hair!
