Today’s classic song of the day was a minor hit for a major group. The song is “Satisfaction Guaranteed (Or Take Your Love Back)” and the band is Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes. This Philly Soul classic was released in April of 1974 and peaked at just #58 on the Billboard Hot 100. The single did better on Billboard’s R&B chart, however, getting all the way to #6. It also did somewhat better in the UK, topping out at #32 on the British charts.
“Satisfaction Guaranteed” was written and produced by the hitmaking team of Kenneth Gamble and Leon Huff. The backing tracks were provided by MFSB, Sigma Sound Studios’ house band.
The song is a driving stomper that shows off Teddy Pendergrass’ soulful vocals. It’s a Philly Soul production, to be sure, but has hints of early disco, as well. It really shows off the group at its best.
And here’s today’s daily bonus video of the day, Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes, with Teddy Pendergrass on lead, performing “Satisfaction Guaranteed” on the February 23, 1974, of Soul Train. This is one powerful song.
