“My Angel Baby” by Toby Beau is today’s classic song of the day. Released as a single in April of 1978, this soft rocker peaked at #13 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #10 on the Cash Box Top 100, but went all the way to #1 on Billboard’s Easy Listening chart.
Toby Beau was the name of a band, not a person. The band was formed in Texas in the early ’70s and it got its name from one of the last wooden shrimp boats docked in Port Isabel, on the Gulf Coast of Texas. The band consisted of Danny McKenna, Balde Silva, and Ron Rose on guitars, Steve Zipper on bass, and Rob Young on drums.
“My Angel Baby” was written by bandmates Danny McKenna and Balde Silva and was the band’s only big hit, making them a one-hit wonder. After releasing a few more albums, the members of the band started to drift apart. Today, Balde Silva is still working the club circuit, along with his wife Rennetta and son Michael, as Toby Beau.
